Fit to Eat – National Hot Dog Month Day 9

fit to eatI first met Michaela, who runs Fit to Eat, a “healthy” sandwich shop in downtown Portland, ME, in Old Orchard Beach a few summers ago. She was running Wicked Good Wieners – a little hot dog cart – out on the pier. Michaela’s food service savvy earned her the lead role at Fit to Eat, but she wasn’t ready to leave the wieners behind!

Wicked Good Wieners at Fit to Eat

While red snappers aren’t on the menu anymore, Fit to Eat serves up all beef, grilled franks with lighter toppings, wrapped up instead of on a bun. Leave it to Michela to have a little double entendre in her repetoire: she gleefully explains that you should ALWAYS wrap your wiener!

Hotdogman Jr. and I paid a visit and found the place very busy and Michaela (along with her little sister) running the joint efficiently and with typical friendly, fun attitudes. The hot dog offerings were limited, but delicious nonetheless. There’s something for everyone at Fit to Eat; veggie wraps, fresh cold cuts, grilled sandwiches, and, of course, some Wicked Good Wieners.

I’m glad she’s keeping the “tradition” alive. The original Wicked Good Wieners segment is popular with fans of Hot Dog Stories, so it’s good to see them live on. Even without the references to Red Snappers and the funky tee-shirts, Michaela is putting Fit to Eat on the map with hot dogs- and more. You can check out Fit to Eat on their Facebook Page; be sure to stop in at 65 Market Street the next time you’re in Portland!

I shoot Hot Dog Stories with a Kodak Zi8 camera with an Audio Technica ATR288W VHF Battery-Powered TwinMic Microphone System, a Flip Ultra HD camera, and a 60″tripod. I edit with Cyberlink PowerDirector 11 Ultimate. I will also take some stills with my new Canon EOS Rebel Camera.
