Charlies – National Hot Dog Month Day 15

Charlies New BedfordCharlies Hot Dog Stand has been a fixture on Achusshnett Ave. in New Bedford since the 1930’s. The current owners are the fourth caretakers of this iconic little stand and they’re serving up grilled Kayems on grilled buns with their signature “meat sauce” that’s reminiscent of a Coney Island sauce. Niece Kristine was on the grill this day and she runs the hot dog business in a friendly and efficient manner.

Charlies Meat Sauce

Kristine didn’t want to call Charlies Meat Sauce a Coney Island Sauce, but she could! It’s very similar in texture to the Rhode Island Hot Wiener Sauce, but with a tangier flavor. Whatever you call it, a tomato-less, spiced hamburger sauce is what many call Coney Island Sauce. It’s served the traditional Coney way too: with mustard, onions, sauce, and celery salt. Whatever Kristine wants to call it, I call it yummy!

I was there on the early side as I had some other stuff to do, but there was a steady stream of customers. Most of the hot dog customers went for grilled dogs on grilled buns with a side of fries and a drink. They serve burgers at Charlie’s too. They’re open Monday-Saturday, 11 AM to 10 PM. Check out their Facebook Page for the lowdown.

Charlies, along with NicksDee’s and Gary’s Best is competing in the Fun 107 Hot Dog Poll to see who has the best hot dogs in the area. I won’t be voting, since I don’t rate, I celebrate! If you happen to stop by, make sure you tell the person in the window “the Hotdogman sent me.”

Enjoy the video.

I shoot Hot Dog Stories with a Kodak Zi8 camera with an Audio Technica ATR288W VHF Battery-Powered TwinMic Microphone System, a Flip Ultra HD camera, and a 60″tripod. I edit with Cyberlink PowerDirector 11 Ultimate. I will also take some stills with my new Canon EOS Rebel Camera.
